As has been widely published in the media, GlaxoSmithKline has settled crimincal and civil complaints with the US government for fraudulent marketing of Paxil, Wellbutrin, and Avandia, to the tune of $3 Billion in fines. While no individuals are facing criminal penalties for the errors, ommissions, and improper behavior reported, should the Medical Communications and Information department at GSK shoulder some of the responsibility for the mistakes made at the time? Medical Information and Communications departments exist to be the central source of scientifically well-balanced information and data about a company’s drug products. In the case of Avandia, GSK admits “inadvertent omissions from certain reports” of study status… Learn More

As I indicated in my post summarizing the CBI Conference on Biopharmaceutical Contact Centers, one of the takeaways from that event was that customer experience still matters, even in an industry that is subject to regulatory or legal constraints. Can a company really provide customer service if they have to be constantly worried about litigation or FDA regulaory action? Additionally, the question of who the “customer” even is, is not exactly always clear for a pharma company. Who… Learn More

Validation - this word has been making many in pharma industry shudder at the thought for almost 15 years. Next week promises to be a busy and interesting week for a few of us at Vision Point Systems. I’m on my way to Brussels for an ISPE conference on Improving Productivity with Risk-Based Validation. The IT track of this event will focus on the prospect of validating “modern” technologies such as cloud service providers and virtualized server hardware. Yong Lee is on his way to Philadelphia for a conference on Interactive Response Technologies for the Clinical Trials. This should be a great venue for exchanging ideas on best practices in this specific application and to trade stories of success (and otherwise) Bob Murphy will have a virtual… Learn More
